GARLIC, HAM & CHEESE MONKEY BREAD

Monkey bread is not one of those things that is limited to just sweet recipes. Granted, if you did a search for monkey bread I’m pretty sure the sweet recipes would outweigh the savory, but give it time. There’s something to savory monkey bread and everyone just needs a little more time to give it a chance.

Now me and my crew, we love it all. Sweet, coated in sugar and a syrup-y, candy-like glaze. Yes please! Fluffy bread stuffed with ham and cheese, perhaps, and sprinkled with green onions and more cheese. Um, absolutely! We’re equal opportunity monkey bread connoisseurs.

Now let’s talk more about that savory one for a minute. This monkey bread is the mother of all savory monkey breads. Picture it. Each piece of that flaky, buttery dough is stuffed pieces of salty ham and gooey, cheddar cheese. Those little balls of goodness are stacked on top of one another and layered with more bits of cheese, ham and green onions. Then it takes a little bubble bath in a garlic, butter and green onion mixture!

Now tell me your mouth isn’t watering!?!

This monkey bread is delicious, a cinch to throw together and a great way to use up some leftover ham you may have in the fridge. It’s also a fun recipe to get the kiddos involved in cooking. My little man pulled up a stool as soon as I pulled out the can of biscuits. He had a blast mashing the dough and playing with it a bit. He also enjoyed stuffing it with cheese and ham, although I think he ate as much as he put in the bread!

As much fun as we had making this bread, it’s even more fun to eat. Pulling pieces of warm buttery bread and watching the cheese strings stretch to no end. That will bring out the kid in all of us!

GARLIC, HAM AND CHEESE MONKEY BREAD

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Can jumbo, flaky biscuits (8 count)
  • 1 Cup EZ carve ham, cut in half inch pieces
  • 1 ¼ Cups shredded colby-jack cheese
  • 3-4 Green onions, sliced, plus more for garnish
  • 6 Tbsp butter
  • ⅛ Tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ Cup shredded white sharp cheddar
  • Garlic salt

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350. Spray a 9x5 loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray, lightly sprinkle bottom and sides with garlic salt, sprinkle about a tablespoon of green onions over the bottom of the pan. Set aside.
  2. Cut the biscuits into quarters. Flatten and gently stretch the biscuit pieces, place 3 to 4 slices of ham in the center of the dough, add a little pinch of cheese (about a teaspoon), wrap the dough around the ham and cheese, pinch to seal and place in the pan. Repeat the process with remaining dough. When half of the dough is stuffed and in the pan, sprinkle a tablespoon of green onions and half of the white cheddar over the dough in the pan. Continue adding the dough to the pan until all the biscuits are gone. Sprinkle any remaining ham over the loaf.
  3. Place butter in a microwave safe dish, place in microwave and heat until melted. Add the garlic powder 1 tablespoon of green onions to the melted butter and stir and pour evenly over the biscuits.
  4. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, until dough is cooked through and golden. The butter will still be a little bubbly when you pull it out of the oven but will soak into the bread after it sits for about 5 minutes. Once the bread has set, remove from pan and place on serving platter, top with remaining white cheddar and green onions.

Enjoy!
